Karen Kitchens, Artist

As an abstract expressionist since early in her childhood years, Karen fills her blank canvases with a myriad of colors, rhythm, and spontaneous emotion, building layers of colors and forms in her brushwork. Residing in both Colorado and Florida, Karen’s artwork is influenced by the magnificent nature and visual language communicated by the intense palette of the Rocky Mountains and the peaceful waters and white sands of the beach.

My Story

Karen attended Colorado State University, majoring in Fine Art and studied privately under such re-known master artists as Ramon Kelly, Michael DeSatnick and Evelyn Hickman.  Karen began working in oils and acrylics realistically and after many years, moved forward, experimenting with abstracts in various mediums. This pushed Karen to expand her horizons and explore new techniques and mediums new to her. The freedom in personal expression with her flowing colors illustrated with vibrancy and energy have defined her emotional response to composition and design. Karen’s mix of bold styles and colors bring a subtle, yet sophisticated balance to her style.

Karen worked in her early career, exhibiting and managing art galleries in Colorado.  Her work has been exhibited across the United States, most recently at the prestigious von Liebig Art Gallery in Naples, FL and Starry Night Gallery in Daytona Beach, FL.  She is in many private collections in the US and Europe.  During her career, Karen has directed many art exhibitions including charity and multi-state invitational exhibitions on behalf of The American Cancer Society, Battered Women’s Association, Colorado Raptor Association, Nightwalker Enterprises and Toys for Tots as well as directed exhibitions for the Curfman Gallery at Colorado State University.

Karen also holds a Bachelors in Marketing and two MBAs with concentrations in Business Finance and Project Management.  She resides in Central Florida with her husband, Ken, and is corporate Chief Real Estate Officer with Redbarre LLC in addition to producing and selling her art.

Her artist website, www.bananafishstudios.com, contains current pieces available for purchase.
