Class Overview

An introduction to the basic principles and theories of color. The six-week class will examine color properties, color schemes and harmonies, as well as the emotive qualities of color—mood and emotion. The class will also introduce color temperature and its importance in mixing color, creating depth of field, and emotive principles.

  • Color Schemes and Harmonies: Explore monochromatic, analogous, complementary, and more to create balanced and visually appealing compositions.

  • Emotive Qualities: Discover how colors evoke moods and emotions, from the calming blues to energizing reds.

Color Temperature: Understand warm vs. cool colors, and how they influence mixing, spatial depth, and emotional impact in your artwork.

Class Structure
This beginner-friendly course spans six weeks, with each session building on the last. Classes meet once a week for 2 hours, blending theory with practical exercises. No prior experience is required—just bring your curiosity and a set of basic art supplies (list provided upon registration).

Weeks 1-2: Introduction to color basics and properties.
Weeks 3-4: Schemes, harmonies, and emotional aspects.
Week 5: Color temperature and advanced applications.
Week 6: Final project and still life painting.

Hands-On Projects
Get ready to create! You'll craft a detailed 12-part color wheel to serve as your personal reference tool. Culminate your learning by painting a small still life, applying a color scheme that resonates with you.
