My Story
Hillary Gross, a member of the Pastel Society of Florida, has exhibited her artwork in galleries in Florida, Virginia, and Washington, DC, including the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, the Center for the Arts in Vero Beach, Florida, where her work is part of the Center’s permanent collection, Boca Museum of Art in Boca Raton, Florida, Deland Museum of Art in Deland, Florida, and Peninsula Fine Arts Center, Newport News, Virginia, where she has won several awards in juried exhibitions.
Hillary defines her approach to art as follows:
In my work I seek to draw attention to the more subtle, tactile qualities of the world in which we live. These qualities are too often lost, in the busy, hectic, hi-tech, multimedia modernity in which we live. By appealing to both the literal and the abstract, my paintings allow my viewers to re-discover the joy of the natural world.
Hillary Gross was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. Her interest in drawing and painting started at a young age, and Ms. Gross won numerous awards and attended prestigious art workshops in an around Virginia before graduating high school. After graduating high school Ms. Gross earned numerous awards and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC.
Current and Future Intentions
Topography, interconnection, the in-between, though invisible is where the magic often happens. A tipping point emerges and can place urgency in what happens next. The in-between of pure nature and pure commercialism. The in-between of understanding the need to preserve health of the planet and wanting to exploit the earth for what it can give us right now. Where does the spark begin? When does something become so valuable that we cannot live without it and when does it becomes complete garbage?
I want to explore the interconnectedness between wealth, sexes, races, countries and continents. Where is the in-between? In the covid-19 pandemic, where are we inexplicably connected and where will there always be a rift and why? I’d like to explore the points in which our world intersects between different states of balance or imbalance.
In my latest artwork I use 2-demensional geographical maps and paint, marker, ink, and other mediums to explore and respond to the literal lines, emotional connections and memories of the geographical locations of the maps.
I would also like to work with other media such as computers, human interaction, and sculptural media such as 3-dementional topographical maps as mold for clay.
